Find lookalike accounts and enrich them
Apollo + Clay + HubSpot
Who it's for
GTM engineers and SDR leads who build account lists from closed-won customers and want enriched, de-duplicated records in the CRM.
What you get
Lookalike accounts, ready for review (table before anything is saved). Sample output: every company and person in it is fictional.
Profile of your last 10 closed-won: B2B software, 80–300 employees, US or Canada, usually a RevOps lead involved in the deal. | # | Company | Employees | Country | Fit | Contact (title) | |---|------------------------|-----------|---------|-----|------------------------------------| | 1 | Fernhill Software | 140 | US | 92 | Dana Okafor (Head of RevOps) | | 2 | Quarry Lane Analytics | 210 | CA | 88 | Sam Whitlock (Sales Ops Manager) | | 3 | Larkspur Freightworks | 95 | US | 81 | none found, skip or retry later | ...17 more Skipped 6 domains already in HubSpot. Nothing has been created yet. Reply 'approve 1-2, 4-20' to create these companies and contacts.
Time and cost
Estimate About 15–25 minutes, including your review of the table.
Assumptions: One run with a 10-deal profile, 50 lookalike companies searched, and 20 people enriched.
- Apollo: One company search returning 50 results, plus any people enrichment you run in Apollo. Some tools use credits. Company search, company enrichment (single and bulk), company job postings, and people enrichment (single and bulk) use credits; people/contact search, CRM, sequence, email, task and analytics actions do not. Get conversation insights uses credits only if the conversation has AI insights. Source: docs.apollo.io, checked 2026-10-16
- Clay: Up to 20 enrichments, one per company you approve. Some tools use credits. People and company search are free; enrichments (email, phone, tech stack, etc.) and Functions that enrich consume Clay credits at the same rate as in Clay, with no MCP surcharge. New connections get 500 free credits; ChatGPT interactions typically use 20-100 credits. Source: university.clay.com, checked 2026-10-16
- HubSpot: Reads, plus up to 40 writes (20 companies and 20 contacts) after you approve them. Credit use not confirmed by HubSpot.
Exact credit costs depend on your plan with each vendor. Check the tool pages before a large run.

Developer setup
Auth setup and mcp.json for Claude Code and Cursor
- Apollo: Use OAuth sign-in for interactive use. For headless runs, use an API key in the
X-Api-Keyheader. - Clay: Sign in with OAuth in your client (run
/mcpin Claude Code). Do it once interactively, and the client stores and refreshes the token. - HubSpot: Sign in with OAuth in your client (run
/mcpin Claude Code). Do it once interactively, and the client stores and refreshes the token.
Put this in .mcp.json (Claude Code, project root) or ~/.cursor/mcp.json (Cursor). Swap the example keys for your own, and don't commit real ones. Remove the // comment lines if your client requires strict JSON.

Step-by-step prompts
- Pull the 10 most recent closed-won companies from HubSpot with industry, employee count and country. Summarize what they have in common.
- Using that profile, search Apollo for 50 companies that match. Exclude any domain that already exists as a company in HubSpot.
- For the top 20 by fit, run Clay enrichment to find the head of RevOps or sales ops at each. Show me the results as a table before saving anything.
- After I approve the table, create the companies and contacts in HubSpot and add a note saying the source is a lookalike search.
Run it on a schedule (optional)
- Run it monthly, or after each batch of closed-won deals, instead of on a fixed daily timer.
- In a scheduled run, stop after the review table: save it as a note or a list for a person to approve, and don't create records automatically.
- Put a hard cap on the number of searches and enrichments in the prompt, so one bad run can't use up the month's credits.
Where this goes wrong
- Duplicates slip into the CRM. Subsidiaries and rebrands use different domains, so 'exclude existing domains' misses them. Ask for a name-and-domain match against HubSpot and review near-matches by hand.
- Wrong contact matched. Common names and people who recently left the company produce confident but wrong matches. Ask for the source and the date of each contact, and drop anything without both.
- Credit overrun. 'Enrich the top 20' can turn into 50 if the prompt is loose. State the number twice, and ask the assistant to stop and confirm before running any enrichment.
- A weak profile from too few deals. Ten deals from one quarter can reflect a single campaign, not your ICP. Read the summary in step 1 before you let it search.
Gotchas
- Apollo search and enrichment spend Apollo credits, same as in the app. Cap the list size in your prompt.
- Clay CRM write-backs are admin-governed. Do the CRM writes through HubSpot, or check with your Clay admin first.
- Always check HubSpot for an existing record before enriching, so you don't pay twice or create duplicates.
- Keep HubSpot writes behind an approval step until you trust the output.
